Where you put your weather station matters just as much as the station itself. Here's how to get placement right.
- Temperature and humidity sensors belong in full or partial shade, around eye level (5–6 feet), unless your station has radiation shielding.
- Keep your rain gauge level, elevated enough to dodge splashback, and clear of obstructions.
- Wind speed and direction are officially measured at 33 feet — out of reach for most of us, so mounting your anemometer above the roofline is your next best bet.
- Have an all-in-one sensor suite? Split the difference: 10 feet or higher works well for both wind and the rest of the sensors.
- Mounting to a structure? Always run a ground wire.
- Pick a spot that's easy to reach — your station will need cleaning and maintenance down the line.
