Setting up a weather station is easier than you'd think, and getting it right makes all the difference. Here are the essentials, straight from our field team.
Installation basics:
- Temperature and humidity sensors: about six feet off the ground, roughly eye level.
- Anemometer and wind vane: as high and as unobstructed as possible. Official measurements are taken at 33 feet — most homes and businesses can't hit that, but higher is always better.
- Rain gauge: at least 4–6 feet up, clear of splashback.
- All-in-one sensor suites: aim for 10 feet or higher, in open space, at least 3–4 times the height of nearby obstacles.
Keeping it accurate: watch for odd readings (comparing against a nearby official station helps), recalibrate as needed, inspect for loose parts or corrosion, give it a seasonal cleaning, and swap the batteries at least once a year, ideally before storm season hits.
